Hastings & Gore is a song written by my dear friend Clive Quigley. He taught it to me back when in my late teens at Naramata Centre when we both worked on summer staff. Clive wrote this hauntingly beautiful song in response to his first visit to First United Mission Church in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) in Vancouver, BC.

This is a demo home recording i created in 2020. It is recorded by me with my voice and guitar.

I lived and worked in this incredible community in the early 1980s, living as a live-in caretaker at First United Mission Church including being on the first staff at Carnegie Centre (after it was saved + renovated by DERA).

Being there opened my eyes wide in so many ways… where i also felt safe and a part of this potent Vancouver Eastside neighbourhood.

I’ve heard recently that the building of First Church at Hastings & Gore has been demolished to make way for an affordable housing project and redevelopment. For more info, please go to: firstunited.ca
